## TL;DR

- **A pixel is not proof of current spend.** Meta, Google Ads, and TikTok pixels show current or historical ad infrastructure.
- Active Meta ads observed through public ad data are the clearest current paid-social signal in this workflow. They still do not reveal spend, ROAS, margin, or account health.
- Start with a demand signal, add a traffic threshold, find one visible tech-stack gap, then reveal a relevant buyer. "Has Meta Pixel" alone is not a send-ready list.
- StoreInspect's July 22, 2026 pull analyzed **933,765** Shopify stores with traffic data. **264,705** had 50K+ estimated traffic and at least one paid-media signal; **4,333** had active Meta ads observed.
- The reproducible query lives in `scripts/blog-data/shopify-paid-ads-agency-leads-stats.ts`, with its generated output in `scripts/blog-data/shopify-paid-ads-agency-leads-data-summary.md`.

This guide is for agencies and ecommerce software teams trying to answer a commercial question: which Shopify accounts show enough demand and enough fit to justify manual research or outreach?

It is not a method for estimating exact ad spend. Storefront signals cannot tell you a merchant's budget or campaign performance.

## Active ads and pixels are different signals

Use the strongest signal the channel makes publicly available, and describe it accurately.

| Signal | What you can say | What you cannot say |
|---|---|---|
| Active Meta ads observed | Public Meta ads were observed when the account was last checked | Exact spend, profitability, targeting, or whether every campaign is healthy |
| Meta Pixel | Meta advertising or retargeting infrastructure is present or was left installed | The store is advertising today |
| Google Ads tag | Google conversion, remarketing, Shopping, Search, or related infrastructure is present | A campaign is live or spending a specific amount |
| TikTok or Pinterest pixel | Channel infrastructure is visible | Current campaign status or budget |
| No visible pixel | The storefront scan did not detect that client-side signal | The channel is unused; server-side and checkout-only setups can be missed |

The practical rule is simple: use active Meta ad data for current Meta activity. Use pixels as qualification or historical-infrastructure signals. Then verify any account you plan to contact.

## Current StoreInspect dataset

We refreshed this guide from a production read-only query on **July 22, 2026**.

| Funnel step | Stores |
|---|---:|
| Shopify stores with traffic data in this pull | **933,765** |
| 50K+ estimated monthly traffic | **308,929** |
| 50K+ traffic plus a paid-media signal | **264,705** |
| Contactable accounts in that pool | **208,540** |
| Accounts with a verified contact | **111,060** |
| Accounts with a verified outreach-role contact | **6,916** |
| 50K+ stores with active Meta ads observed | **4,333** |

The broad pool includes active Meta ads or storefront-visible Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, or Pinterest infrastructure. It is useful for market sizing and account discovery. It is not a list that should be emailed without further qualification.

### Reproducible methodology

The checked-in script `scripts/blog-data/shopify-paid-ads-agency-leads-stats.ts` runs inside a repeatable-read, read-only production transaction. It uses each store's latest available snapshot, joins current contact coverage, and applies the following definitions:

- **High traffic:** the StoreInspect tiers 50K-200K, 200K-1M, 1M-5M, 5M-20M, or 20M+.
- **Paid-media signal:** active Meta ads observed, Meta/Facebook infrastructure, Google Ads, TikTok Pixel, or Pinterest Pixel.
- **Active Meta ads observed:** the stored active Meta ad count was greater than zero at the last Meta enrichment.
- **Contactable:** at least one non-bounced email was attached to the store.
- **Verified contact:** at least one attached email had verified status.
- **Verified outreach role:** a verified contact had a founder, owner, executive, marketing, growth, ecommerce, performance, acquisition, or related role.

Important limitations:

- A pixel is not proof of current spend.
- Active Meta ads do not reveal budget, ROAS, margin, creative quality, or account health.
- Storefront detection can miss server-side tagging, private apps, backend-only tools, and checkout-only scripts.
- "No visible app" means the scanner did not detect one; it does not prove the workflow is absent.
- Traffic tiers are estimates, not revenue or merchant-reported analytics.
- Contact coverage is not a complete buying committee and every important account should be verified manually.

## Step 1: Define the buying decision before filtering

"Stores running ads" is too broad. Define the service, evidence, gap, buyer, and minimum account size first.

Examples:

| Your offer | Starting signal | Add this constraint | Verify before outreach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta account or creative work | Active Meta ads observed | 50K+ traffic and a category you understand | Current ads, creative volume, landing-page match |
| Google Shopping or feed work | Google Ads plus Merchant Center signals | Meaningful catalog and traffic | Shopping visibility, feed quality, landing pages |
| Lifecycle/email service | Active Meta ads or paid-media infrastructure | No visible Klaviyo or other email app | The retention stack is genuinely absent or weak |
| CRO or landing pages | Active ads plus traffic | Missing reviews, popup, or experimentation signal | Specific page and conversion friction |
| Channel expansion | Meta plus Google infrastructure, no TikTok Pixel | Product and creative fit for TikTok | Current channel activity and economics |

This prevents a common failure: generating a large list from one weak signal and inventing the same pitch for every account.

## Step 2: Build the account shortlist

Start with traffic, a channel signal, and contact availability. The StoreInspect paid-media shortlist below opens a supported workflow with:

- 50K-200K or 200K-1M estimated traffic
- Meta Pixel detected
- at least one attached contact

That URL intentionally uses Meta Pixel as a broad infrastructure filter. It does not claim every result has active campaigns.

StoreInspect shows the active Meta ad count on enriched store profiles and includes it as `Meta Active Ads` in supported exports. Prioritize accounts with a count above zero when current Meta activity is required, then verify visible ads in the Meta Ad Library before writing the outreach note.

For Google Ads, TikTok, and Pinterest, treat the pixel as infrastructure unless you verify current activity in a channel-specific public or first-party source.

## Step 3: Add one defensible gap

A demand signal tells you why the account may have budget. A gap tells you why your service may be relevant.

Good gaps are narrow and observable:

- Active Meta ads with no visible email marketing app
- Paid-media signals with no visible reviews app
- Meta and Google infrastructure with no visible TikTok Pixel
- Google Ads on a large catalog with no visible Merchant Center signal
- Multiple acquisition pixels with no visible attribution tool
- Active ads pointing to a landing page with a specific, manually reviewed conversion issue

Use app and pixel exclusions to form the hypothesis, not to declare a diagnosis. "We did not detect Klaviyo" is accurate. "You have no email marketing" is not necessarily accurate.

## Step 4: Verify the account manually

Before revealing a contact, spend two to five minutes checking the account:

1. Open the store and confirm it is live, relevant, and in your service geography.
2. Check active Meta ads in the Meta Ad Library when Meta activity is part of the pitch.
3. Open the ads and landing pages. Note a real creative, offer, message-match, or conversion issue.
4. Re-check the proposed app gap on the storefront. Allow for server-side or private tools that cannot be detected.
5. Decide whether the account is worth contact data and a personalized message.

This is where a filtered list becomes a buying-intent list.

## Step 5: Reveal a relevant buyer only after account qualification

Match the role to the problem:

| Offer | First roles to look for |
|---|---|
| Paid social or creative | Head of Growth, Performance Marketing, Paid Social, CMO, founder at smaller stores |
| Google Shopping or feed work | Ecommerce Manager, Performance Marketing, Growth, Digital Marketing |
| Lifecycle/email | CRM, Retention, Lifecycle, Ecommerce, Marketing |
| CRO and landing pages | Ecommerce, Growth, Digital Product, Conversion, founder at smaller stores |
| Attribution | Performance Marketing, Growth, Analytics, Ecommerce |

If the only available address is generic, do more account research before sending. Contact volume is not a substitute for role relevance.

## Step 6: Write from evidence, not surveillance

A useful first line identifies a public observation and the reason it matters.

Good:

"I saw three active Meta ads promoting the summer collection. The ad promise is specific, but the landing page opens on the full collection without repeating the offer. I recorded a two-minute teardown if useful."

Good when only infrastructure is visible:

"I found Meta and Google paid-media signals on the storefront, but no TikTok Pixel. If those channels are current and you have enough creative volume, TikTok may be worth a controlled test."

Avoid:

- "I can see how much you spend."
- "Your tracking is broken" based only on a missing storefront signal.
- "You are losing $X" without first-party conversion data.
- A generic claim that every store with a pixel is actively advertising.

## A practical weekly workflow

1. Pick one offer, category, traffic band, and geography.
2. Build a 50-100 account shortlist from supported StoreInspect filters.
3. Prioritize active Meta counts when current Meta activity is required.
4. Add one specific app, pixel, feed, creative, or landing-page gap.
5. Manually verify the best 10-20 accounts.
6. Reveal the relevant buyer only for qualified accounts.
7. Send a short message grounded in one public observation.
8. Track reply, meeting, trial, and paid outcomes by segment—not just send volume.
9. Review false positives and tighten the filter before the next batch.

The result may be a list worth contacting, a segment that needs a different offer, or a decision not to send. All three are useful outcomes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a Meta Pixel mean a Shopify store is running ads now?

No. It shows Meta advertising or retargeting infrastructure is present or was left installed. Use active ads observed through Meta's public ad data for a stronger current-activity signal, then verify the account in the Meta Ad Library.

### Can I estimate a store's ad spend from its pixels or active ad count?

No. Pixel presence and visible ad count do not reveal budget, ROAS, margin, or profitability. Use them to prioritize research, not to publish or pitch a spend estimate.

### What is the best default paid-ads prospecting filter?

Start with 50K+ estimated traffic, one relevant paid-media signal, a category you understand, at least one attached contact, and one defensible stack or landing-page gap. Require active Meta ads observed when the offer specifically depends on current Meta activity.

### What should I say if StoreInspect detects no email or analytics app?

Say that no visible app was detected and ask or verify before diagnosing the account. Storefront detection can miss private apps, server-side tools, custom implementations, and checkout-only scripts.

### How often should I refresh the list?

Re-check important accounts immediately before outreach. Pixels, apps, contacts, and ad status change at different speeds, and a saved export is a snapshot rather than a permanent fact.

Start with the filtered paid-media shortlist above, then use active-ad evidence, one real gap, and a relevant buyer to decide which accounts deserve outreach.
