TL;DR
- 6,777 of 144,232 domains matched at least one of three selected currency labels. Those labels do not establish installed-app market share.
- 92.2% of Auto Currency Switcher labels came from JavaScript-global detection. The rule includes generic currency objects, so we cannot attribute that count to MLVeda.
- BUCKS offers automatic switching on its free plan. MLV and Beast list automatic location-based selection on their paid plans. Confirm the exact feature you need before paying.
- A converted product price does not prove local-currency payment. Check Shopify Markets, the payment provider and destination-specific behavior together.
Shopify currency converter apps can change the prices shoppers see, select a market or add a currency control to a theme. The right choice depends on which of those jobs your store needs. Start with your payment setup, then compare the app's free limits and integration behavior.
We combined a fresh StoreInspect study with current publisher documentation and a live furniture-store check. The research also exposed an attribution problem in our own detection labels. It is a reason to inspect a candidate store before recommending an app or building an outreach list around a vendor name.
How We Collected This Data
We extracted the study on October 22, 2026, using scans from October 20 at 02:00 Oslo to October 22 at 02:00 Oslo, with the end excluded. For each stored domain, we selected its most recent full scan that completed successfully inside that interval, excluded records currently confirmed dead and required a recorded app list. The 144,232-domain panel includes 17,282 empty app lists.
We matched exact normalized names or slugs for three selected labels: Auto Currency Switcher, Bucks Currency Converter and BEST Currency Converter. Counts deduplicate each label by domain. A domain may represent one of several storefronts operated by the same business. Full scan describes our pipeline mode, not exhaustive coverage of every storefront page.
Category and estimated traffic come from store records at extraction time. All detector versions were unrecorded. We did not independently measure precision or recall. Generic theme code, shared signatures and remnants can create false matches; unsupported apps and limited page coverage can create missed matches. These figures measure selected recorded signals, not working features, vendor customer counts or a lower bound on installations.
The comparison below uses publisher documentation checked separately on October 22. We did not install the four apps or measure conversion lift, performance or merchant bills. Our live example tests public product-page behavior only.
Shopify Currency Converter Apps: Study Findings
| Recorded label | Matched domains | Share of panel | Recorded detection method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Currency Switcher | 6,681 | 4.632% | 6,163 global-object matches; 518 element matches |
| Bucks Currency Converter | 871 | 0.604% | App-block identification |
| BEST Currency Converter | 510 | 0.354% | 391 global, 96 element and 23 script matches |
| Any selected label | 6,777 | 4.699% | Deduplicated union |
1,282 domains had more than one selected label. Adding the three rows would therefore overcount domains. The overlaps also cannot establish that merchants deliberately installed multiple converters.
Why we are not ranking vendors by these counts
Our configured Auto Currency Switcher rule includes JavaScript objects named Currency and DoublyCurrency, plus general currency-switcher elements. Those are insufficient to identify MLVeda on their own. The BEST rule also mixes several signatures, including a shared vendor domain. Neither label can be read as a verified subscription to its namesake app.
BUCKS matches in this panel came through app-block identification, which is more specific than a generic currency object. Even that does not prove the widget is enabled, configured correctly or responsible for a completed payment. A current storefront check remains necessary. Our app-detection guide explains the broader visibility limits.
Where the research candidates appear
| Estimated monthly visits | Panel domains | Domains with any selected label | Match rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 50K | 142,844 | 6,659 | 4.66% |
| 50K to 200K | 1,160 | 101 | 8.71% |
| 200K to 1M | 225 | 17 | 7.56% |
| 1M or more | 3 | 0 | 0.00% |
The two middle tiers provide 118 domains for more focused inspection. These are traffic estimates, not international visitor counts or revenue measurements. The panel is heavily concentrated in the lowest tier, and three domains cannot support a conclusion about the largest stores.
By stored category, fashion contributed 1,942 matches among 37,425 domains, home and garden 783 among 18,533, and beauty 776 among 14,552. Those pools can guide agency research. None establishes an internationalization problem or purchasing intent.
Shopify Currency Converter Apps or Native Markets?
Check native local pricing before adding a converter. Shopify's pricing documentation describes automatic or manual exchange rates, rounding and country-specific pricing. It also requires a country selector when selling in local currencies. Full functionality depends on Shopify Payments and access to one-page checkout.
The payment provider matters separately. Shopify's local-currency restrictions say that local-currency selling is supported by Shopify Payments or Adyen; orders through other third-party providers use the store's default currency. An app's currency count cannot expand that payment-provider support.
For physical goods, Shopify also documents checkout currency restrictions: with a supported setup and one-page checkout, changing the shipping destination can change the currency to match that market. Digital goods have a different restriction rule.
Use this order when reviewing a store:
- Confirm the merchant's gateway, target countries and eligible local-currency payment methods.
- Review market currencies, regional prices and the theme's country selector.
- Identify the remaining job: automatic selection, a different selector design, display-only conversion or an integration requirement.
- Add an app only when its documented behavior addresses that job.
Currency selection also differs from language translation and operating separate regional stores. Our translation-app guide and multiple-store study cover those decisions.
Shopify Currency Converter Apps Compared
Prices below are USD, billed monthly, checked on October 22, 2026. These are published plans, not measured quality rankings. Annual billing and trials are separate offers.
| Option | Free plan | Monthly paid plan | Decision point |
|---|---|---|---|
| BUCKS Currency Converter PRO++ | Unlimited currencies, automatic location-based switching, styling and checkout-currency notification | Plus $9.99; Pro $19.99 | Free automatic switching; paid plans add custom rates, formatting and integrations. Pro adds analytics. |
| MLV Auto Currency Switcher | Theme-integrated selector, 200+ ISO currencies and Shopify Payments multicurrency checkout support | Super Success $9.95 | IP-based country detection and rounded currency prices are listed on the paid plan. |
| Beast Currency Converter | Unlimited currencies, converter design and support | Elite $9.95 | Paid features include automatic location selection and checkout-currency notification. Its description explicitly distinguishes storefront conversion from checkout. |
| Currency Converter Plus | No ongoing free plan shown | Professional $9.99 | Published features include automatic country detection, rounding and one-minute rate updates; a 14-day trial is listed. |
Which free currency converter should you consider?
BUCKS is a candidate when the required feature is automatic location-based switching without a monthly charge. MLV's free plan is worth checking for a theme-integrated manual selector. Beast's free plan lists unlimited currencies, while its location-based auto-selection sits in Elite.
The current Grizzly Apps listing at the long-standing doubly-currency-converter URL is titled Beast Currency Converter. Our stored research label remains BEST Currency Converter. Use the current listing for installation and pricing decisions rather than assuming every older comparison uses the current product name or free-plan limits.
A “local currency checkout” feature claim still needs to be read alongside Shopify's gateway requirements. Likewise, hundreds of display currencies do not mean a merchant can accept payments in every one of them. Check the actual target currencies and supported payment methods before comparing the headline totals.
A Live Example: Currency and Country Changed Together
On October 22, 2026, we inspected 111 Furniture's Caida Profunda Table. The page loaded a BUCKS-specific Shopify extension and an /apps/buckscc/ script. It displayed a header country selector alongside a separate BUCKS currency control.
Initially, the header showed United States | USD and the product showed USD prices. Choosing Euro (EUR) in the BUCKS control changed the product's displayed currency to EUR and the header to Austria | EUR. We observed the result in the rendered page.
That is useful implementation evidence: a shopper's currency choice can also select a country context. It does not establish how this store processes payment, calculates exchange rates or handles every destination. We did not add an item, enter checkout or place an order. This separately checked example came from the broader topic-research pool; it is not presented as a member of the two-day study panel.
When reviewing a similar store, record the country selector, product currency and selected market together. A screenshot of a converted price alone leaves part of the behavior unexplained.
A Useful Review Workflow for Agencies and App Sellers
The study's 118 higher-traffic candidate domains are a starting queue for investigation. In StoreInspect, combine a currency-related app filter with your category and traffic requirements, then inspect each shortlisted store. Current dashboard results can differ from this fixed study window.
For each candidate, record:
- The current date, product URL and visible currency controls.
- Vendor-specific evidence, such as a named app extension, separately from generic theme currency code.
- Whether changing currency also changes the country, product availability or regional price.
- Whether two visible selectors stay synchronized, including on mobile.
- The merchant's confirmed gateway and target markets before recommending payment-related work.
Propose work around an observed problem or an agreed requirement. A detection label alone does not establish broken currency conversion, lost sales or a reason to replace the incumbent. Stores without a matched label may already use native Markets, custom code or another app.
FAQ
Does Shopify support multiple currencies without an app?
Yes, eligible native local-pricing setups can show local prices, support payment and handle refunds in local currency. Shopify Payments, Adyen, compatible payment methods and checkout configuration have different requirements. Start with the linked Shopify documentation and the merchant's actual setup.
Why does a converted price change currency at checkout?
Check whether the app changes display prices only, whether the selected payment method supports local currency and whether the shipping destination selects another market. Those are different causes. Our public-store study cannot diagnose which one applies to a merchant's checkout.
Is a free Shopify currency converter enough?
It can be. Compare the required feature with the actual free tier. BUCKS lists automatic location-based switching for free; MLV and Beast list automatic location-based selection on paid plans. Theme compatibility and payment-provider support still need checking.
Do these figures show the most popular currency converter?
No. The study found 6,777 domains with selected labels, but generic signatures and overlapping rules prevent a reliable vendor ranking. It also excludes other currency apps, native setups and custom implementations.
Findings to Use in Your Decision
| Evidence | What it changes |
|---|---|
| 6,777 matched domains in a 144,232-domain panel | Provides a dated research pool; does not establish vendor market share |
| 6,163 of 6,681 Auto Currency Switcher labels came from global detection | Verify a named provider before using that label for competitor targeting |
| Free-plan feature boundaries differ | Compare automatic selection and formatting requirements before upgrading |
| EUR selection also changed the live example's country | Review market selection alongside the displayed currency |
| Payment-provider restrictions remain | Confirm the native payment setup before promising local-currency checkout |
