TL;DR

  • Shopify product badges can come from your theme, custom code or an app. Check the existing sale-price display before paying for another tool.
  • In 219,035 stored domains successfully scanned during October 11 to 17, 2026, we matched 674 domains (0.31%) to three selected app identities: Sami, Rimix or Flair. This measures those signals, not all badge use.
  • Sami appeared on 497 domains, Rimix on 98 and Flair on 80. One domain matched both Sami and Rimix, so the counts overlap.
  • Compare the rule and its plan limit. Sami's free tier covers 50 products; Rimix's free tier lists four badges for unlimited products. A free plan can suit one catalog and fail another.

Shopify product badges help shoppers notice a product's status or a useful attribute before opening its page. Choosing a tool starts with the message you need to maintain: a sale, a new arrival, an inventory condition or something about the product itself. A long list of badge templates does not tell you whether that message will stay correct across variants, collections and mobile screens.

How We Collected This Data

We extracted the data on October 18, 2026. The fixed observation window ran from October 11 at 02:00 Oslo to October 18 at 02:00 Oslo, with the end excluded. For each stored domain, we used the most recent full scan that completed successfully inside that window, excluded currently confirmed-dead records and required a stored app list. All 22,448 empty app lists remained in the denominator.

The resulting panel contains 219,035 distinct stored domains, not necessarily distinct merchant companies. A full scan is a StoreInspect pipeline mode, rather than a signals-only update; it does not mean every page or product was inspected.

We matched exact normalized names or slugs for three selected identities, then deduplicated each identity by domain. The retained query includes aliases, raw matched identities, observation dates and the breakdowns below. Traffic tiers are estimates, and category and traffic fields reflect the store records at extraction time.

This is a finite storefront-signal study. It excludes other badge apps, native theme labels and custom implementations. App remnants or false matches can inflate counts; page coverage and missed signatures can reduce them. Detector versions were unrecorded throughout this panel, and we did not measure detection precision. The results establish neither an installation census nor a statistical lower bound on badge use. They contain no orders, conversion outcomes or merchant subscription bills.

Shopify Product Badges: What the Three Signals Show

Recorded app identityMatched domainsShare of the full panel
Sami Product Labels & Badges4970.227%
Rimix Product Badges980.045%
Flair800.037%
Any of these three identities6740.308%

Sami has the largest matched count within this three-identity comparison. That does not establish its rank across every Shopify badge app. The remaining domains may already display badges through another route.

How the match rate varies with estimated traffic

Estimated monthly visitsPanel domainsDomains with a selected identityMatch rate
Under 50K212,9506100.29%
50K to 200K4,597491.07%
200K to 1M1,451140.96%
1M or more3712.70%

The 50K to 200K group had a higher observed match rate than the under-50K group. For an agency researching merchandising setups, those 49 matching domains are a manageable starting pool for manual inspection. The pattern does not show that badges generated traffic or that any store needs an upgrade. The 1M-plus group is too small to support an enterprise-market conclusion.

Which categories contributed the most matches

These are the five categories with the largest matched counts, rather than the five highest rates:

Stored categoryPanel domainsDomains with a selected identityMatch rate
Fashion56,7442100.37%
Home & Garden26,250710.27%
Beauty21,759700.32%
Food & Beverage13,869460.33%
Jewelry11,806380.32%

Fashion supplies the largest research pool here, partly because it is a large category in the panel. These counts do not measure which niche benefits most from labels.

Shopify Product Badges Without an App

Start with a product that already has the price and compare-at price configured. Shopify's sale-price documentation explains that the theme controls how the storefront displays those prices and may add a sale message or percentage badge. Customization depends on the theme. Basic sale-price presentation does not automatically require a badge app.

A compare-at price and a discount code are different mechanisms. A badge saying a product is on sale is not proof that an automatic discount or code will apply to the shopper. Keep the display consistent with the offer's actual conditions. Our discount app guide covers the offer side of that decision.

Use the theme if its existing label and rules satisfy the requirement. Evaluate an app or a scoped theme change when you need something specific, such as several product attributes, variant-level labels, campaign scheduling, translations or consistent placement across different product grids.

A Live Example: Product Attributes Beside New Arrivals

On October 18, 2026, we inspected the rendered Birkenstock India women's collection. Product cards displayed “NEW”, and several EVA styles also displayed “WATER FRIENDLY.” The page loaded a Flair theme-extension script. Our panel had independently recorded the Flair identity for birkenstock.in on October 16.

The useful detail is the pairing of two messages. One communicates newness; the other gives a product attribute shoppers can use while browsing. A store selling technical products, footwear or cosmetics can ask which attribute helps someone choose before opening a product page.

We did not inspect the merchant's configuration, establish which rule generated each label, validate every product claim or measure the effect on sales. The observation verifies a public merchandising pattern and a loaded integration, not a performance endorsement.

Compare Product Label Apps by Their Actual Limits

These are Shopify App Store listing checks from October 18, 2026, with prices in US dollars per month. We did not install or benchmark the apps. App-level feature descriptions do not establish that every feature belongs to the entry plan.

AppEntry allowancePaid features
SamiFree: five active labels/badges, up to 50 products, one label group and basic targetingGold $9.90 lists unlimited products and collection/tag targeting. Diamond $14.90 adds variant-level labels, inventory-status labels and multiple languages.
RimixFree: four badges for unlimited products, all-products/manual targeting and variant badgesBusiness $8 adds unlimited badges and advanced filters, including collections, tags, price and stock/sale conditions. Premium $10 adds quantity discounts.
FlairBuzz $29: unlimited product badges and sale banners with core conditionsBoost $49 adds scheduling, grouping and stacking. Grow $99 adds cart/variant promotions and premium conditions.
DECOFree: four labels/badges on 20 productsStarter $9 lists unlimited labels and translations. Growth $19 adds scheduling, advanced conditions and product-metafield display. Paid tiers list an additional $20/month for Shopify Plus.

DECO is an additional comparison candidate, outside our three-identity study. No detection count is inferred for it.

For a small fixed set of manually chosen products, either free tier may cover the task. For a larger catalog, compare product limits separately from the number of badge designs. For stock-based automation, check the required tier rather than assuming the app's general description applies to its free plan.

Placement also needs verification. Flair's collection-page instructions distinguish themes supporting collection app blocks from those needing a manual product-card edit. A badge working on a product page does not prove it will appear in collection cards, search results or recommendations.

Audit One Label Before Applying It Across the Catalog

Use a representative product with more than one variant, then check the complete display rule:

  1. Define the claim. Write down what qualifies a product for “New,” “Low stock” or a product attribute. A bestseller label needs a defined ranking basis and period. A payment-logo strip answers a different question; see the social-proof workflow guide.
  2. Check the eligibility boundary. Inspect qualifying and nonqualifying products. For a variant-level rule, change variants and confirm the label follows the selected option.
  3. Check every relevant grid. Inspect collection pages, filtered results, search and product recommendations. Confirm the label remains attached to the right item when results update.
  4. Check mobile readability. Look for obscured product images, overlapping review stars, hidden prices and labels that rely on color alone. Keep essential product information available as readable text.
  5. Check expiry and ownership. For a scheduled campaign, confirm the start, end and time zone. Agree who removes a manual label when its claim stops being true. Check for duplicate labels from the theme and app.

Measure the change against the merchant's own baseline. A useful product attribute might affect collection-to-product clicks or product questions; a promotion might affect margin as well as purchases. The adoption tables above supply no expected conversion lift.

Use the Study to Research Merchandising Work

In StoreInspect, combine a selected app signal with category and estimated traffic to build a short inspection queue. The study's 49 matches in the 50K to 200K tier illustrate the scale of one such queue; dashboard totals can change after this fixed panel.

For an agency, record the page, label, eligibility rule you can verify and the exact behavior worth discussing. An app founder can use the same process to investigate compatibility or workflow needs. Existing app use does not establish dissatisfaction, and non-detection does not establish a missing feature. Confirm the problem with the merchant before proposing a replacement.

FAQ

Do I need an app for Shopify product badges?

Not always. Your theme may already display a sale badge from price and compare-at price data. Evaluate an app or custom change for requirements the existing theme cannot meet, such as additional targeting, variant behavior or scheduling.

Which product badge app was most common in this study?

Sami had the largest count among the three selected identities: 497 domains, compared with Rimix's 98 and Flair's 80. The study does not rank every badge app or establish Shopify-wide market share.

Can I add product labels for free?

The listings checked on October 18, 2026 include free tiers for Sami, Rimix and DECO. Their product, badge and targeting limits differ. A free plan is useful only if it covers the catalog and rule you need.

Does a badge app create the discount shown on a label?

A displayed label alone does not establish a working discount. Check the specific app's offer capabilities and the rule configured in Shopify. Sale prices, automatic discounts and discount codes can produce different storefront and purchase behavior.

Does an absent badge-app signal identify an agency lead?

It identifies a record to inspect, not an unmet need. Native theme labels, custom code and apps outside the study can already cover the task. Verify the storefront behavior and speak to the merchant before treating it as an opportunity.
