The best apps for new Shopify stores, based on 91,088 stores. See why most use 0-2 visible apps and when reviews, email, support and upsells make sense.
The best apps for new Shopify stores solve a problem the store has now without duplicating features Shopify or the theme already provides. Installing a fixed bundle of 20 tools adds cost and setup work before the first sale.
We analyzed 91,088 Shopify stores with estimated creation dates across 12 complete calendar months. The data contradicts the standard app-listicle playbook: 57.2% had no detectable app in the 24 comparable categories we studied and another 34.8% had only one or two.
Some links in this article are affiliate links. We may earn a commission if you purchase through them, at no extra cost to you. We only recommend tools we've actually tested.
Generic lists often recommend reviews, email, loyalty, subscriptions, helpdesk, analytics, SEO, popups, page builders, bundles, upsells, wishlists and back-in-stock tools before a merchant has made a sale. The result can be extra cost, setup work, duplicated scripts and ten dashboards to maintain.
The Shopify App Store is useful for comparing solutions to a known problem. Browsing it as a pre-launch checklist encourages premature installs. Our app bloat study found that app needs scale with operational complexity. The new-store data shows which categories appear early, which become common later and which remain niche even after the first year.
We selected stores with a high-confidence, month-level Shopify creation estimate from August 2025 through July 2026. We compared them with 124,386 stores from the preceding 12 months. The latest snapshots and cohort data were extracted on August 24, 2026.
The creation estimate is based on the oldest currently observable Shopify page evidence. The estimate does not represent a guaranteed incorporation date or exact launch day. We also reject page-derived dates that fall after StoreInspect first discovered the same store, which prevents a long-known store with newly recreated pages from being mislabeled as new.
| Estimated age on August 1, 2026 | Stores | Stores with 1+ comparable apps | Average apps | 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0-2 months | 8,659 | 34.8% | 0.55 | 2 |
| 3-5 months | 16,143 | 40.2% | 0.67 | 2 |
| 6-11 months | 66,286 | 44.5% | 0.79 | 2 |
| 12-23 months, comparison | 124,386 | 51.8% | 1.04 | 3 |
For each store, we used its latest snapshot and counted distinct apps in 24 categories such as reviews, email, support, upsell, subscriptions, loyalty, page builders, analytics, SEO and back in stock. We excluded payment processors and wallets. Otherwise Apple Pay, Visa and similar checkout plumbing would make a lean store look app-heavy.
Important limitations: StoreInspect detects public storefront evidence such as scripts, app blocks, widgets, network signatures and vendor-specific elements. Backend-only, private, server-rendered and inactive apps may be invisible. A count of zero means zero comparable storefront apps detected, not necessarily zero apps installed in Shopify Admin. The age comparison is cross-sectional. It shows what stores of different estimated ages look like now, not the exact day each app was installed.
June and July 2026 also have less creation-evidence coverage than earlier months because very recent stores have had less time to be discovered and expose qualifying page evidence. Do not read the smaller youngest-month counts as a decline in Shopify store creation.
The main benchmark is simple:
| Detectable comparable apps | Recent stores | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 0 apps | 52,074 | 57.2% |
| 1-2 apps | 31,720 | 34.8% |
| 3-5 apps | 6,904 | 7.6% |
| 6-10 apps | 385 | 0.4% |
| 11+ apps | 5 | less than 0.1% |
Only 390 of 91,088 stores had six or more comparable visible apps. The 90th-percentile store in every sub-12-month age band had two.
Two apps is a benchmark, not an ideal limit. Detection is a lower bound and different stores need different functions. Even with those caveats, a merchant does not need a double-digit app stack to launch. If your pre-launch checklist contains 15 subscriptions, it reflects the checklist author's monetization model more than normal merchant behavior.
For a broader benchmark by traffic level, read how many Shopify apps is too many. If you want examples of stacks that work together, our Shopify app combinations study separates complementary pairs from redundant ones.
These are the leading storefront-detectable apps after removing payment and wallet categories. Popularity shows adoption. Use the fit criteria below before treating any app as a recommendation.
| Rank | App | Category | Stores | Adoption | Prior cohort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Judge.me | Reviews | 17,139 | 18.82% | 22.31% |
| 2 | Klaviyo | Email marketing | 7,638 | 8.39% | 13.05% |
| 3 | WhatsApp Business Chat | Customer support | 6,342 | 6.96% | 7.29% |
| 4 | Kaching | Upsell | 3,112 | 3.42% | 1.72% |
| 5 | Loox | Reviews | 2,753 | 3.02% | 2.86% |
| 6 | PushOwl | Notifications | 2,237 | 2.46% | 3.92% |
| 7 | PageFly | Page builders | 2,174 | 2.39% | 3.81% |
| 8 | Shopify Inbox | Customer support | 1,575 | 1.73% | 2.27% |
| 9 | Omnisend | Email marketing | 1,404 | 1.54% | 2.01% |
| 10 | Avada Trust Badges | Social proof | 1,296 | 1.42% | 1.64% |
| 11 | BOGOS | Upsell | 1,111 | 1.22% | 1.79% |
| 12 | Triple Whale | Analytics | 855 | 0.94% | 1.24% |
| 13 | Seal Subscriptions | Subscriptions | 768 | 0.84% | 1.47% |
| 14 | Mailchimp | Email marketing | 761 | 0.84% | 2.44% |
| 15 | AfterSell | Upsell | 354 | 0.39% | 0.30% |
One product moved against the broader pattern. Kaching Bundles appeared on 3.42% of recent stores versus 1.72% of the preceding cohort, almost twice the share. AfterSell also edged up from 0.30% to 0.39%. Most established tools showed lower shares in the newer cohort, which is expected when adoption accumulates over time. Kaching's difference may reflect recent product momentum, cohort composition or better detectability. It is worth investigating, but it is not proof of performance.
Reviews are the strongest default candidate because they are both common early and closely associated with stores that have traction.
| Estimated age | Stores with a detected review app |
|---|---|
| 0-2 months | 17.38% |
| 3-5 months | 20.45% |
| 6-11 months | 23.73% |
| 12-23 months | 27.46% |
Judge.me dominated the category. It appeared on 17,139 recent stores and accounted for 83.5% of recent stores with a detected review app. Loox ranked second at 2,753 stores and 13.4% of review-app adopters.
Choose Judge.me when you need a practical review layer and structured product proof. Choose Loox, Fera, Stamped or Yotpo when photo and video UGC, loyalty, syndication or a broader retention suite justifies the extra setup. Compare the tradeoffs in our Shopify review apps study.
Do not install two review apps to “test both” on a live storefront. Our pair output found 434 recent stores exposing both Judge.me and Loox. A duplicate pair may mark a migration or it may produce duplicate widgets, scripts and review requests. Pick one system of record.
Email is the clearest age-dependent category in the study. Third-party email adoption rose from 5.72% in the youngest band to 12.66% among stores estimated at 6-11 months. The preceding-year comparison reached 18.67%.
Capture consent and set up essential transactional and lifecycle messages from the start. Add a separate marketing platform when the list and workflows justify it.
Klaviyo was detected on 7,638 recent stores, or 8.39% of the cohort. It held 73.6% of detectable email-category adoption. Omnisend followed with 1,404 stores, while Mailchimp appeared on 761.
Use Shopify's native email capabilities while the list is tiny and flows are simple. Move to Klaviyo when segmentation, event-based automation, testing and deeper customer profiles have a real use case. Try Omnisend when you want email and SMS in one merchant-friendly workflow. Our email marketing app comparison goes deeper on fit and pricing.
Own the customer relationship on day one. Pay for dedicated automation when you can use it.
Customer support was the second-most common category in the youngest band at 11.44%. WhatsApp Business Chat led the new-store cohort with 6,342 detections, followed by other chat and inbox tools.
The best choice depends on where customers already ask questions:
See the feature breakdown in our customer support app study, plus the entity pages for Tidio and Gorgias.
Support apps should reduce response friction. One founder cannot reliably monitor five contact channels.
Upsell adoption does not follow the same smooth age curve as email. It was 6.36% in the 0-2-month group, 7.36% at 3-5 months and 5.93% at 6-11 months. Recent Kaching adoption is a major part of that pattern.
The traffic split is more revealing. Upsell apps appeared on 3.84% of recent stores under 50K estimated monthly traffic and 20.39% of those at 50K or more. Stores with traction are over five times as likely to expose an upsell tool.
This association cannot show that an upsell app creates traffic. It does show that upsell tooling is much more common when a store has enough sessions and orders to measure offer performance.
Use Kaching for visible quantity breaks when customers naturally buy multiples. Use BOGOS for gifts and promotional campaigns. Try AfterSell for post-purchase offers or Rebuy when a larger catalog and customer base justify a more advanced recommendation layer. The full category data is in our best Shopify upsell apps guide.
Only 1.66% of stores in the 0-2-month band exposed a page builder. Adoption rose to 3.40% at 6-11 months and 5.11% in the comparison cohort.
PageFly led with 2,174 recent stores and 77.6% of detected page-builder adopters. That makes it the data-backed default to evaluate, not a mandatory install.
Start with a flexible theme such as Dawn and Shopify's native sections. Add a builder when a specific landing page, campaign workflow or layout cannot be produced efficiently in the theme. If that gap exists, try PageFly. Compare it with the alternatives in our page builder app study.
A builder addresses layout constraints. Positioning, product photography and offer quality still need separate work.
Several categories become more common with store age but remain rare in the first months:
| Category | 0-2 months | 6-11 months | When it becomes justified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscriptions | 0.58% | 1.86% | Customers already repurchase on a predictable cycle |
| Loyalty | 0.47% | 1.08% | Repeat purchase and margin can support rewards |
| Back in stock | 0.16% | 0.50% | Stockouts create measurable lost demand |
| Wishlists | 0.12% | 0.55% | Considered purchases and returning shoppers are common |
| Analytics | 1.14% | 2.80% | Paid acquisition or channel complexity exceeds native reporting |
| SEO | 1.25% | 2.22% | A specific technical or workflow gap exists |
For subscriptions, Seal Subscriptions and Appstle were almost evenly split at 768 and 691 recent stores. Unlike reviews or email, there was no overwhelming leader. Read our subscription app study before choosing.
For loyalty, Smile.io led at 640 recent stores. Loyalty makes sense when customers already have a reason to return. It cannot manufacture purchase frequency for a product bought once every five years. Compare loyalty apps and evaluate Growave if combining loyalty, reviews and wishlists would replace several separate tools.
For inventory-driven demand, use our back-in-stock app comparison. For measurement, start with Shopify reporting and graduate to tools such as Triple Whale only when the spend and attribution problem warrant it. Our analytics app study explains the handoff point.
Within the 91,088 recent stores, 13,122 were currently estimated at 50K or more monthly traffic. Their app pattern was much denser than the under-50K group.
| Category | Under 50K | 50K+ | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reviews | 19.26% | 42.06% | 2.2x |
| Email marketing | 8.21% | 30.34% | 3.7x |
| Customer support | 9.67% | 23.85% | 2.5x |
| Upsell | 3.84% | 20.39% | 5.3x |
| Analytics | 1.50% | 8.15% | 5.4x |
| Page builders | 2.56% | 6.17% | 2.4x |
| Subscriptions | 1.31% | 3.51% | 2.7x |
| Loyalty | 0.71% | 2.49% | 3.5x |
Treat this as a maturity pattern rather than an install list. Traffic may create the need for apps, stronger operators may adopt tools earlier and our traffic tiers are estimates. The sequence is still coherent: proof, owned communication, customer help and offer optimization appear before specialized retention and measurement.
The most common clean pair was Judge.me plus Klaviyo, detected together on 2,608 recent stores. It covers two distinct jobs, product proof and lifecycle communication. That is more defensible than stacking two review platforms or two email systems.
You can inspect these patterns at the store level. At extraction time, Eslab showed Judge.me and Klaviyo alongside a cart drawer, delivery estimate and retention tooling. Panorama Mobile combined Judge.me, WhatsApp support, SEO tooling and a page builder. Signoola exposed six comparable apps, including two review systems and two WhatsApp tools. Its stack also revealed consolidation opportunities.
Use StoreInspect to check a competitor's current apps, theme, pixels, traffic tier and change history before copying its stack. Identify the job each tool performs before you copy any of it.
For the broader maturity pattern, see Shopify tech stacks by growth stage and our app retention benchmarks.
Use this sequence:
Before launch: Use Shopify and your theme's native features. Install an optional app only for a launch-blocking gap, usually reviews, support or a business-model requirement such as subscriptions.
After the first orders: Look for repeated friction. If shoppers ask the same pre-purchase question, improve product content or add the right support channel. If proof is weak, add one review system. If subscribers and flows exceed native email, graduate to a dedicated platform.
After repeatable acquisition: Test upsells, bundles, post-purchase offers and deeper analytics. At this point there is enough traffic to measure whether the app earns its cost and page weight.
After repeat purchase appears: Consider loyalty, subscriptions, wishlists and more advanced retention. Use behavior as the trigger, not a generic setup checklist.
For every install, write down one metric and one review date. If the tool does not improve that metric or remove meaningful manual work, uninstall it cleanly. Our app retention study shows why initial installation should not be treated as a permanent decision.
If you are still preparing the storefront, start a Shopify trial and keep the first stack deliberately small. A fast feedback loop is more valuable than a crowded admin.
For most new stores, evaluate one review app, an email solution appropriate to your list size and the support channel customers actually use. Judge.me, Klaviyo or Omnisend, Shopify Inbox, WhatsApp and Tidio are common options, but you may need none of them on day one if native Shopify features cover the job.
Our benchmark is zero to two comparable visible apps. That range covered 92.0% of the 91,088 recent stores studied. It is a benchmark, not a hard limit, because backend-only apps are not visible and some business models legitimately need specialized tools.
Judge.me is the strongest data-backed review default. It appeared on 18.82% of recent stores and held 83.5% of detected review adoption. It is still only appropriate when product reviews address a real trust gap.
Not automatically. You should collect consent and prepare essential messages before launch, but Shopify's native email features may be enough while the list is small. Klaviyo becomes more valuable when segmentation, behavioral flows and testing justify the extra system.
Usually not. Only 1.66% of the youngest stores showed a detectable page builder. Start with native theme sections, then add PageFly or another builder for a specific layout or campaign workflow that the theme cannot handle efficiently.
Add one after the core offer converts and you have enough orders to measure the result. Upsell adoption was 20.39% among recent 50K+ traffic stores versus 3.84% below 50K, but the relationship is associative rather than causal.
No. Loyalty adoption was only 0.47% in the 0-2-month cohort. Add loyalty after customers demonstrate repeat-purchase behavior and the margin can support rewards.
Only when replenishment or membership is central to the business model. Subscription adoption was 0.58% among the youngest stores and 1.86% at 6-11 months. A standard one-time-purchase store should not add subscriptions merely because they appear on a checklist.
Storefront apps can add scripts, widgets and network requests, but impact varies widely by implementation. App count alone is not a speed score. Avoid duplication, measure the storefront before and after installation and remove tools that do not earn their cost.
