TL;DR
- 3 of 145,595 scanned domains had a Donorbox reference. All three had a public donation link when we inspected them. That verifies a fundraising entry point, not a donation added to a Shopify order.
- 0 matched our selected Shop for Good identity. This narrow result does not measure the whole donation-app market or establish that other stores lack giving programs.
- Choose who gives and where the money goes first: a supporter making a separate donation, a shopper adding to an order, or a merchant funding a contribution from sales.
- Free labels need inspection. Donate Source's free tier is restricted to test and trial stores. ShoppingGives lists free installation followed by paid terms. Donorbox Standard has transaction-based fees.
Shopify donation apps can put very different money flows behind a similar Donate button. A nonprofit might need a separate recurring-fundraising form. A retailer might want an optional cart contribution. Another might promise to donate part of its own sales. Those requirements call for different implementations.
We queried StoreInspect's recent scan history, inspected every matched domain and checked official product listings. The useful finding is how the visible donation entry points relate to actual store research, rather than an unsupported popularity ranking.
How We Collected This Data
We extracted the study on October 31, 2026, selecting each domain's most recent full scan that completed successfully between October 29 at 01:00 Oslo and October 31 at 01:00 Oslo, excluding the end. We required an app list and excluded records currently confirmed dead. The 145,595-domain panel includes 18,862 empty app lists. A domain does not necessarily represent a separate business.
We matched exact normalized names or slugs for two selected identities: Donorbox and Shop for Good. The Donorbox rule looks for its vendor domain in script references or donation-widget elements. The Shop for Good rule looks for its vendor domains or named widget elements. We counted a domain once per identity. All three matches were Donorbox script detections; their stored evidence URLs and detector versions were unrecorded. No domain matched both identities.
Full describes the scan mode, not exhaustive coverage of product, cart, checkout or fundraising pages. We did not measure precision, recall, active paid subscriptions, contribution amounts, charity payouts or sales effects. Unsupported tools, native features, custom implementations and separate pages may be missed. A script can also remain after its original use changes.
Traffic estimates and categories come from store records at extraction. This is a selected recent-scan panel, not a random sample of Shopify. The October 31 browser observations below establish only the public links and scripts described. We did not enter checkout, submit a donation or test a payment.
Shopify Donation Apps: What the Study Shows
| Selected identity | Matched domains | Share of the full panel | Recorded method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Donorbox | 3 | 0.0021% | Script |
| Shop for Good | 0 | 0% | No match |
| Either selected identity | 3 | 0.0021% | Deduplicated union |
The denominator is all 145,595 eligible domains, including empty app lists. The small percentage measures these two selected identities only. It cannot answer how many merchants donate, which app has the largest market share, or how many stores need a donation app.
Traffic coverage and its limits
| Estimated monthly traffic tier | Panel domains | Selected identity matches |
|---|---|---|
| Under 50K | 143,592 | 3 |
| 50K–200K | 1,700 | 0 |
| 200K–1M | 298 | 0 |
| 1M or more | 5 | 0 |
All matches sit in the lowest estimated traffic band, which also dominates this panel. With only three matches, there is no sound basis for a traffic-based app recommendation. The stored categories are Food & Beverage, Gifts & Flowers and Uncategorized, one match each. Treat them as inspection candidates rather than a niche ranking.
Three Storefronts, Three Verifiable Donation Entry Points
We inspected these public homepages on October 31, 2026. All three belong to the study panel, rather than being famous brands added as illustrations.
| Domain | Public evidence observed | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Change Please US | Donate link to a Donorbox campaign and install-donate-button.js | A separate campaign destination is exposed alongside the coffee storefront |
| Sea Shepherd Store Italia print-on-demand store | Dona link to a Donorbox campaign and install-popup-button.js | A fundraising entry point exists alongside merchandise |
| Saylor's Light | Donate and Support Our Work links to a Donorbox campaign, plus install-popup-button.js | Supporter fundraising is presented separately from the Shop navigation |
For example, Change Please US links to donorbox.org/change-please-usa-website-donations. We did not test the donation forms or complete a payment.
This is why an app label is only the beginning of research. All three records led to a verifiable donation destination, but none of these homepage observations establishes checkout round-ups, merchant matching, donation settlement or an active recurring donor base.
For an agency, the next question changes from “Which donation app is installed?” to “Should supporters donate independently, or should giving be part of a merchandise order?” The app detection accuracy guide explains why a public signature needs that second check.
Compare Shopify Donation Apps by Money Flow
These are documented options to evaluate, not products we installed or ranked by performance. Prices are USD terms checked October 31, 2026. Only Donorbox appears in the measured matches; the other comparison products are outside the selected identity query.
| Option and official source | Workflow to evaluate | Displayed starting terms |
|---|---|---|
| Donorbox | Separate fundraising | $0/month; 2.95% plus processing |
| Zestard Easy Donation | Storefront giving | $6.99/month plus 0.05% of donations |
| Donate Source | Product/cart contributions | $3.99/month; restricted free tier |
| ShoppingGives | Managed giving and POS | $29/month plus 0.5% after trial |
Separate fundraising with Donorbox
Donorbox Standard has a $0 monthly subscription and a 2.95% platform fee for donation forms, plus payment processing. The observed stores expose Donorbox campaign destinations. That is a relevant model when someone should be able to support an organization without buying merchandise. The Standard donation-form fee is separate from payment-processing charges; other features have different platform fees. Confirm the feature and payment method before calculating costs.
Storefront giving with Easy Donation or Donate Source
Easy Donation documents custom amounts, round-ups, portion-of-sales campaigns and widgets on several surfaces. Its Basic plan includes one donation widget; its $9.99/month Advance plan lists multiple donations, with the same stated commission.
Donate Source documents collecting contributions in the Shopify store without a separate payment provider. Basic supports a single donation on product and cart pages; Pro lists multiple donations at $5.99/month. Confirm the exact surface and plan you need rather than reading “free plan” as free production use.
Managed giving with ShoppingGives
ShoppingGives describes a managed donation process, SKU-level rules and online/POS support. Its listing specifies free installation and a 7-day trial with 20 Donation Credits, followed by $29/month plus 0.5%. Confirm the eligible nonprofit, disbursement arrangements and what the quoted 0.5% applies to. The compact App Store pricing line does not define a denominator clearly enough to calculate a universal total bill. External charges can be billed separately from Shopify.
These products are not interchangeable merely because they all support giving. A form that collects money and a managed program that routes contributions have different operational responsibilities.
A Donation-Flow Review for Agencies
Use a detected reference to start an account review, then verify the public destination and discuss the intended workflow with the merchant. You can research a known store's visible technology in StoreInspect. Non-detection alone is not a reason to pitch an installation.
- Name the contributor. Is the supporter donating separately, is the shopper adding money, or is the merchant funding a pledge? Record the amount rule and whether customers choose it.
- Map the destination. Identify the beneficiary, who receives the payment first and who handles disbursement. A Donate label does not answer those questions.
- List the surfaces. Review product pages, cart drawers, standard carts, mobile layouts and any separate fundraising page. Confirm checkout-specific requirements with the vendor and merchant. Our cart drawer comparison covers why a working cart page does not establish drawer compatibility.
- Confirm the money-handling rules. Ask how canceled orders, partial refunds and failed payments affect contributions, receipts and payouts. Verify the reports the merchant needs to reconcile the campaign.
- Price the actual scenario. Separate subscription charges, platform fees, processing charges and the contribution itself. Keep each fee's denominator explicit.
Before launch, the merchant should test its chosen flow in an authorized test environment: acceptance and removal of an optional contribution, the final amount, mobile behavior, receipts and the refund procedure. Those are proposed acceptance checks, not tests performed for this study.
FAQ
Which Shopify donation app should I choose?
Start with the money flow. A separate fundraising form is relevant when supporters should donate without buying goods. A cart donation tool addresses an optional contribution alongside a purchase. A managed giving program may be relevant when the merchant needs help routing and reporting contributions. Our three detected references do not establish a best-performing app.
Are there free Shopify donation apps?
Read the plan conditions and transaction charges. Donate Source restricts its free tier to test and trial stores. ShoppingGives' free-install label is followed by paid terms. Donorbox Standard has no monthly subscription but charges platform fees plus payment processing. These are different meanings of free.
Does detecting Donorbox mean a store offers checkout donations?
No. In this study, all three matched domains exposed Donorbox campaign links and scripts. That confirms a public fundraising entry point. It does not establish a donation line item on a Shopify order, a round-up option or a successful payment.
Can I identify stores that need donation software from missing detections?
Not from missing detections alone. We measured two selected identities, and checkout, separate pages, custom code and unsupported tools can be outside scan coverage. Establish the merchant's giving goal and existing process before proposing software.
Decision Summary
| Evidence or requirement | Useful decision |
|---|---|
| Three verified fundraising entry points in a 145,595-domain panel | Inspect the destination before assuming checkout donations |
| Zero selected Shop for Good matches | Make no claim about category absence or global market share |
| Support without a merchandise purchase | Evaluate a separate fundraising form |
| Optional contribution alongside goods | Evaluate the actual product, cart and checkout integration |
| Merchant-funded giving with managed routing | Confirm program eligibility, payout responsibility and all fees |
