Best Shopify age verification apps adoption data

TL;DR:

  • We analyzed 831,416 current Shopify stores and found only 825 stores, or 0.099%, with a detectable storefront age verification app.
  • HulkApps Age Verification is the live-store leader in our scan with 568 stores, equal to 68.8% of stores with a detectable age app.
  • AgeChecker.Net is the second-largest visible vendor with 186 stores, or 22.5% of age-app stores, and it skews more toward higher-traffic merchants.
  • Food & Beverage drives the most absolute adoption with 346 age-app stores, while the Adult category has the highest rate at 2.017%.
  • Age-app stores look more mature than the average Shopify store: 8.58 apps, 8.30 pixels, 56.2% paid or custom themes, and 40.8% email stack adoption.
  • The biggest outreach gap is not stores already using an age gate. We found 3,267 contactable stores with age-restricted keywords and no detectable age app.
  • This study measures visible app signatures. It does not prove legal compliance, and it does not count custom Liquid gates, backend ID checks, checkout-only controls, or region-hidden workflows.

Search for "best Shopify age verification apps" and most results look the same.

They list a few Shopify App Store tools, mention alcohol, tobacco, vape, CBD, or adult products, and tell merchants to add a popup before visitors enter the store.

That advice is incomplete.

Age verification is not just another popup category. A wine store, vape brand, cannabis-adjacent brand, cigar shop, subscription alcohol merchant, or adult-product store needs a workflow that fits its actual risk: country rules, product restrictions, shipping policy, checkout behavior, fraud workflow, analytics stack, and conversion goals.

So we took a different approach.

We scanned 831,416 current Shopify stores and measured which age verification apps actually show up on live storefronts. Then we compared those stores against the rest of Shopify by traffic tier, category, theme type, app stack, pixel stack, and contact availability.

This is a market map, not legal advice.

Methodology: What We Counted

StoreInspect detects storefront-visible Shopify apps by scanning public pages for JavaScript globals, script URLs, app assets, DOM markers, and known app signatures. For this study, we used each store's latest app data and counted stores with a detectable age verification app signature.

What we can detect:

What we cannot detect:

  • whether a store is legally compliant
  • custom Liquid age gates with no known app signature
  • backend-only ID verification
  • checkout-only restrictions
  • manual age checks handled after purchase
  • region-specific gates hidden from our crawl location
  • private or headless implementations

We also excluded broad identity or eligibility apps such as GovX ID, VerifyPass, and MitID from the age-gate count. Those tools can matter for verification workflows, but they are not the same as storefront age verification for restricted products.

The State of Shopify Age Verification Apps

Across 831,416 current Shopify stores, only 825 had a detectable age verification app.

StatusStoresShare
Detectable age verification app8250.099%
No detectable age verification app830,59199.901%

That is lower than the visible adoption we measured for Shopify accessibility apps, privacy apps, fraud prevention apps, and most conversion-app categories.

Low visible adoption does not mean age verification is irrelevant. It means one of three things is usually true:

  1. Most Shopify stores do not sell age-restricted products.
  2. Some restricted-product stores use custom gates or off-store verification that leaves no app signature.
  3. Many merchants rely on policy text, shipping controls, manual review, or checkout friction rather than a dedicated storefront app.

The stores that do install age verification apps are not lightweight hobby stores. They run more apps, more pixels, and more compliance-adjacent tooling than the average Shopify store.

CohortStoresAvg appsAvg pixelsAvg scorePlusPaid/custom themeEmail stackReviewsPrivacy
Age-app stores8258.588.3089.71.8%56.2%40.8%25.3%12.7%
No detected age app830,5915.166.4374.83.0%46.4%29.0%22.5%0.2%

The privacy number is the standout. Age-app stores are far more likely to run visible privacy or consent tooling than the rest of Shopify, which lines up with the behavior we saw in our privacy-app study: compliance tooling tends to cluster around merchants with more pixels, more paid acquisition, and more operational risk.

This table is not the same thing as a Shopify App Store ranking.

The Shopify App Store legal category includes multiple age verification tools, and current listings include apps such as Blockify Age Verification, AVP, NA Age Verification, and Hulk Age Verification. App Store rankings can move quickly because reviews, pricing, promotions, and category placement change.

Our table answers a different question: which vendors leave detectable signatures on live stores right now?

That distinction matters when you are choosing software, doing Shopify app market-share research, or building a lead list with StoreInspect app filters.

Best Shopify Age Verification App by Use Case

The best Shopify age verification app depends on the workflow you need.

Use caseShortlistWhy it fits
Simple storefront age gateHulkApps Age Verification, Blockify, AVP, AgeX, GA Age Verification 18+A popup-style gate is usually the fastest path for merchants who need a visible age prompt before browsing.
Higher-risk restricted productsAgeChecker.Net, NA Age Verification, AgeCheckLook for stronger identity or document-verification capabilities, not just a date-of-birth modal.
Food, wine, alcohol, or beverage storesHulkApps Age Verification, AgeChecker.Net, BlockifyFood & Beverage has the largest absolute adoption in our dataset, so start with tools proven in this vertical.
Conversion-sensitive storesAVP, Blockify, HulkApps Age VerificationPrioritize customization, mobile behavior, page targeting, and how the gate affects analytics.
Compliance-heavy paid media storesAgeChecker.Net plus privacy and consent toolingPair age gates with consent, analytics, checkout, and support workflows rather than treating the app as a standalone fix.

For a small store, a lightweight gate can be enough to create a clear first layer of friction. For a higher-risk store, especially alcohol, tobacco, vape, cannabis-adjacent, CBD, or adult products, you should look beyond the popup.

The buying checklist should include:

  • Can the app target specific countries, states, products, collections, or URLs?
  • Does it block only the storefront, only certain products, or both?
  • Does it work cleanly on mobile?
  • Does it integrate with checkout, customer accounts, or post-purchase review if needed?
  • Does it preserve Google Analytics, Google Ads, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, and Klaviyo behavior?
  • Can it support different age thresholds by market?
  • Does it create accessibility issues, especially keyboard traps or unreadable modal controls?
  • Can your team export or audit decisions if a dispute happens?

The last two points are easy to miss. Age-gate popups are still storefront UI. They can affect the same accessibility, consent, and measurement concerns covered in our guides to Shopify accessibility apps, Shopify privacy apps, and server-side tracking.

Current Shopify App Store Shortlist

The live-store adoption table and the Shopify App Store buyer list are not identical. StoreInspect measures apps we can detect on public storefronts. The App Store highlights tools that are currently active, reviewed, and positioned for merchant purchase.

As of July 1, 2026, these are the merchant-facing age verification apps worth checking first.

AppCurrent App Store signalBest fit
Blockify Age VerificationLegal-category listing, Built for Shopify badge, age popup, date-of-birth checks, terms checkbox, checkout and admin integrationsMerchants who want a modern App Store-native popup with product, page, and policy controls.
AVP Age Verification PopupFree plan available, paid plan around $3.99/month, page, collection, product, country, and language targetingSmaller stores that want a low-cost popup with more targeting than a basic yes/no screen.
NA Age VerificationEntry gate, before-checkout popup, custom page rules, birthday, yes/no, and checkbox modesStores that want a storefront gate plus a checkout-adjacent check and order-record visibility.
Hulk Age VerificationVisible leader in our scan, App Store listing for no-code 18+/21+ gates, product-page restrictions, and geo-based rulesAlcohol, CBD, tobacco, vape, and cannabis-accessory stores that want a known Shopify age-gate vendor.
Smart Age Verification PopupApp Store listing for country or state rules, product, checkout, and all-page targeting, plus 18+/21+ templatesStores that need location-aware rules and want to test a newer age-gate option.
AgeChecker.NetSecond-largest visible vendor in our scan, with identity verification, public-record, photo-upload, API, and retail ID scanner optionsHigher-risk merchants that need more than a lightweight age popup.

The practical split is simple: use a popup app when the job is visible storefront gating. Look at identity verification tools when the product, jurisdiction, payment processor, or shipping workflow requires stronger proof than a self-attested birthday.

Adoption by Traffic Tier

Age verification app adoption is rare at every traffic level, but the middle of the market has the most visible volume.

Traffic tierStoresAge-app storesAdoptionContactable age-app stores
Under 50K547,4413720.068%284

200K-1M14,00790.064%9
1M+12710.787%1

The 50K-200K tier has the most detected age-app stores, with 443. That is where merchants are large enough to care about conversion, paid media, customer support, and operational risk, but still likely to use off-the-shelf apps rather than custom enterprise workflows.

Only 10 detected age-app stores sit above 200K traffic. That does not mean larger restricted-product merchants ignore age verification. It is more likely that many larger merchants use custom implementations, headless storefront logic, backend checks, or checkout workflows we cannot see from a public storefront scan.

For agencies, this matters. If you sell compliance, conversion, checkout, analytics, or lifecycle services, the reachable segment is not just the 825 stores already using an app. It is the much larger set of stores with restricted-product signals and no visible age app.

Adoption by Store Category

Age verification is highly vertical-specific.

CategoryStoresAge-app storesAdoption50K+ age-app stores
Food & Beverage76,0093460.455%170

Outdoor & Adventure27,939170.061%11
Electronics26,004130.050%8
Gifts & Flowers12,763110.086%4

The clearest pattern: Food & Beverage owns the volume, Adult owns the rate.

Food & Beverage has 346 detected age-app stores, far ahead of every other category. That fits what we found in our food-store app study: F&B stores over-index on operational apps because subscriptions, shipping, perishability, product restrictions, and repeat purchasing make the stack more specialized.

The Adult category has the highest adoption rate at 2.017%, but the base is much smaller. Health, beauty, and outdoor stores also show age-app usage, usually because the category includes supplements, CBD-adjacent products, tactical goods, regulated wellness products, or product lines that need a stronger purchase gate than ordinary apparel.

If you sell into these verticals, combine age verification signals with app and pixel context. A store running Klaviyo, Omnisend, Judge.me, Loox, Recharge, Shop Pay, Afterpay, or Klarna is a more serious prospect than a thin catalog with no stack.

The Stack Around Age Verification

Age verification rarely appears alone. These are the adjacent apps most common on stores with a detectable age app.

Age-app stores often have the same stack layers as other serious ecommerce operators: payment acceleration, email, reviews, page-building, tracking, support, and privacy. They are not just trying to block underage visitors. They are still trying to grow.

That creates tradeoffs:

  • A hard age gate can reduce browsing friction for restricted products, but it can also hide content from search crawlers or disrupt first-session analytics if implemented badly.
  • A modal gate can help with user acknowledgement, but it needs to work with keyboard navigation and screen readers.
  • A product-specific gate can be less disruptive than a full-site gate, but it may leave category, collection, or landing-page gaps.
  • A checkout-only process can be stricter, but it may allow underage visitors to browse restricted products before a block appears.

Age verification also overlaps with CRO, checkout migration, fraud prevention, customer support, and attribution. A merchant should decide where the gate belongs in the full buying path, not just which popup looks best.

Pixel Signals on Age-App Stores

Age-app stores are measurement-heavy. Here are the top pixel signals we found.

PixelAge-app stores using itShare
Google Analytics 462776.0%
Google Tag Manager50961.7%
Google Analytics48859.2%
Meta Pixel31838.5%
Google Merchant Center23428.4%
Google Ads19623.8%
Klaviyo19123.2%
Retention.com17921.7%

If an age gate fires before analytics, consent, or tag-manager logic, it can distort the first pageview and muddy retargeting audiences. If it fires after everything else, it may let marketing tags load before the user has acknowledged the store's restriction.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The correct setup depends on product, jurisdiction, consent mode, ad platform requirements, and the merchant's legal position. But the technical point is simple: age verification should be reviewed alongside Google Tag Manager, Google Ads, Meta Pixel, Klaviyo tracking, and any server-side tracking setup.

The Prospecting Gap

For agencies, app vendors, compliance consultants, and ecommerce operators, the most useful dataset is the gap table.

We looked for likely age-restricted keywords in store names and domains: wine, winery, liquor, spirits, whiskey, beer, brewery, cigar, tobacco, vape, cannabis, CBD, hemp, THC, kratom, hookah, dispensary, adult, and similar terms.

SegmentStores
Likely regulated keyword, no age app, has contacts3,267
Likely regulated keyword, 50K+ traffic, no age app, has contacts1,202
Food and beverage, 50K+ traffic, no age app, has contacts22,233
Health or beauty, 50K+ traffic, no age app, has contacts33,934
Likely regulated keyword, 3+ stack layers, no age app, has contacts345

This is not a list of non-compliant stores. A store can have a custom gate, shipping restriction, checkout review, or off-platform verification process that we cannot detect.

But it is a useful starting point for outreach.

For example:

  • A compliance consultant can prioritize restricted-keyword stores with contacts and 50K+ traffic.
  • A CRO agency can look for stores with an age gate, high pixel count, and weak product-page UX.
  • An app vendor can target stores using adjacent privacy tools but no visible age gate.
  • A lifecycle agency can focus on regulated stores running Klaviyo, Attentive, Postscript SMS, or Mailchimp.
  • A support agency can combine age verification signals with Gorgias, Tidio, or high contact volume.

That is the same segmentation logic we use in our guides to Shopify paid ads agency leads, Shopify SEO agency leads, and decision-maker contacts.

What Current Guidance Says

External guidance is moving in the same direction: stronger age checks are becoming a broader policy issue, not just a design choice.

The FTC held a January 2026 workshop on age verification technologies, and its event page framed age verification as a child-safety, privacy, and technology question. Usercentrics has also summarized the growth of age-verification rules across US states, and PaymentNerds outlines age-verification best practices for ecommerce from a payments and risk perspective.

Shopify merchants should treat those resources as context, not a universal checklist. The exact requirement for a wine club, vape store, adult-product shop, supplement brand, CBD seller, or regulated marketplace can differ sharply.

The operational takeaway is narrower:

  • choose an app that fits the risk level
  • document where age checks happen
  • test the gate on mobile and desktop
  • review how it interacts with checkout, analytics, consent, and accessibility
  • do not assume a date-of-birth popup is enough for every restricted category

FAQ

What is the best Shopify age verification app?

For simple storefront gating, start with HulkApps Age Verification, Blockify, AVP, or AgeX. For stricter identity or document workflows, evaluate AgeChecker.Net, NA Age Verification, or AgeCheck. The best choice depends on whether you need a lightweight age prompt or stronger verification.

How many Shopify stores use age verification apps?

In our July 1, 2026 scan of 831,416 current Shopify stores, 825 stores had a detectable age verification app. That is 0.099% of the dataset.

Which age verification app is most common on Shopify?

HulkApps Age Verification is the visible leader in our scan, with 568 detected stores, or 68.8% of stores that use a detectable age verification app.

Is AgeChecker.Net common on Shopify?

AgeChecker.Net is the second-largest app group in our dataset, with 186 detected stores. It also has a higher concentration of 50K+ traffic stores than simple popup-only tools.

What is the best free Shopify age verification app?

Start with Blockify, AVP, NA Age Verification, Hulk Age Verification, or Smart Age Verification Popup if you want a free-plan or free-to-install App Store option. Check the current plan limits before installing because targeting, reports, templates, and checkout-adjacent controls often sit behind paid tiers.

Do Shopify age verification apps make a store compliant?

Not by themselves. An app can be one part of a compliance workflow, but legal requirements can depend on product type, buyer location, shipping rules, payment processing, documentation, and checkout controls.

Can Shopify block checkout based on age?

Shopify stores can add app-based, theme-based, checkout, or operational restrictions, but the right implementation depends on the plan, checkout setup, market, product category, and app capabilities. For high-risk categories, review checkout requirements with counsel and your Shopify developer.

Do I need Shopify Plus for checkout age verification?

Not always. Some apps can add cart or before-checkout friction on standard plans, while deeper checkout customization may require Shopify Plus or a checkout-compatible app workflow. Check whether the app blocks checkout, disables the checkout button, records age status on the order, or only shows a storefront popup.

Do age gates hurt conversion?

They can. A full-site modal adds friction before shoppers browse. A product-specific gate can be less disruptive but may leave coverage gaps. Test the gate in context with your Shopify CRO checklist, analytics setup, and mobile UX.

Do age gates affect analytics?

They can affect first-session measurement if tags fire before or after the gate in an unexpected order. Review the implementation with Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, Google Ads, Meta Pixel, and consent tooling.

Why is Food & Beverage the largest category for age verification apps?

Food & Beverage includes alcohol, wine, beer, spirits, and other regulated or subscription-heavy products. It had 346 detected age-app stores in our dataset, more than any other category.

Why is the Adult category adoption rate higher?

Adult stores are a smaller category, but a larger share needs some kind of entry friction. We found 59 detected age-app stores out of 2,925 Adult-category stores, or 2.017% adoption.

Can StoreInspect find Shopify stores by age verification app?

Yes. StoreInspect can filter Shopify stores by detected apps, categories, pixels, traffic tier, and contacts. For prospecting workflows, combine age verification app signals with category, traffic, pixel stack, and contact filters.

Age verification is a small visible Shopify app category, but the stores that use it are not random. They cluster around restricted products, higher operational complexity, heavier measurement stacks, and more compliance-adjacent tooling.

For merchants, the right move is to choose the lightest workflow that actually matches the risk. For agencies and app vendors, the opportunity is in the gap: restricted-product stores with enough traffic, contacts, and stack maturity to care, but no visible age verification layer in the storefront data.
