Shopify Store Benchmarks 2026 [289K-Store Study]
Real benchmarks from 289K Shopify stores: apps, pixels, themes, and tech stack data by traffic tier, category, and country.
The 50 best Shopify stores ranked by tech stack, traffic, and growth signals from 289K stores. Not opinions, real data.

Some links in this article are affiliate links. We may earn a commission if you purchase through them, at no extra cost to you. We only recommend tools we've actually tested.
Every "best Shopify stores" article you'll find is a subjective list. Someone browsed around, picked stores they thought looked nice, and called it a day. Shopify's own blog publishes a curated list of 50 stores chosen by their editorial team.
The problem with these lists: they tell you nothing about what makes these stores actually successful. A beautiful homepage doesn't mean the store converts. A recognizable brand name doesn't mean the tech stack is worth studying.
We took a different approach. Instead of picking our favorites, we ranked 289,115 Shopify stores using measurable signals: tech stack depth, tracking pixel coverage, traffic tier, app sophistication, and growth indicators. The result is a list of stores that aren't just pretty. They're well-engineered.
Our ranking combines five signals into a composite lead fit score (0-100):
Every store on this list scores 100/100 and runs on Shopify Plus. They represent the top 0.02% of all Shopify stores.
Limitations: This ranking measures operational sophistication, not revenue or profitability. A store with 15 apps and 20 pixels is highly instrumented, but that doesn't guarantee it's the most profitable in its category. We also can only detect client-side apps and pixels; backend tools are invisible.
Fashion dominates the Shopify ecosystem and our top 50 list. These stores combine deep tech stacks with high traffic:
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Favorite Daughter | 13 | 10 | 200K-1M | Custom |
| 4 | Killstar | 13 | 8 | 200K-1M | Custom |

| 10 | MNML | 12 | 13 | 200K-1M | Custom |

| 37 | Troll Co | 11 | 8 | 50K-200K | Broadcast (Paid) |
| 42 | Mack Weldon | 10 | 20 | 50K-200K | Custom |
| 46 | Steve Madden | 10 | 19 | 5M-20M | Dawn (Free) |
| 47 | DIFF Eyewear | 10 | 18 | 200K-1M | Custom |
| 48 | Frankies Bikinis | 10 | 16 | 200K-1M | Custom |
Steve Madden is the highest-traffic store on this list at 5M-20M monthly visitors. Interestingly, they use Dawn, Shopify's default free theme, proving that a free theme doesn't hold back a store with the right operational infrastructure.
ColourPop runs one of the most sophisticated DTC operations on Shopify, with 11 apps spanning email, reviews, upsell, and loyalty categories.
Three stores use Prestige, making it the most popular paid theme among fashion leaders on this list. For more on fashion store tech stacks, see our fashion apps study.
Beauty stores run the most apps per store among top categories (4.2 avg for top-scoring stores), and 74.3% are on Shopify Plus:
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17 | Jane Iredale | 11 | 14 | 50K-200K | Custom |
| 21 | Amorepacific | 11 | 13 | 50K-200K | Custom |
| 24 | innisfree | 11 | 12 | 200K-1M | Custom |
| 33 | Cliphair | 11 | 10 | 50K-200K | Dawn (Free) |
| 45 | goPure Beauty | 10 | 19 | 50K-200K | Dawn (Free) |
| 50 | Bangn Body | 10 | 15 | 50K-200K | Dawn (Free) |
Amorepacific and innisfree (both Korean beauty giants) share a custom Shopify theme, suggesting a single agency built both stores. This is common among multi-brand holding companies.
Three of the six beauty stores use Dawn, the highest free-theme adoption of any category in our top 50. Beauty brands invest their budget in apps and marketing rather than premium themes. See our beauty apps study for category-specific data.
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | DW Home Candles | 12 | 13 | 200K-1M | Custom |
| 14 | Brooklinen | 11 | 21 | 200K-1M | Dawn (Free) |
| 39 | Voluspa | 11 | 7 | 50K-200K | Turbo (Paid) |
Brooklinen has the highest pixel count on this entire list at 21 tracking pixels. That's exceptional instrumentation for a bedding brand, suggesting deeply layered attribution and retargeting across multiple channels. They also run Dawn, which reinforces the pattern: top DTC brands don't need premium themes to succeed.
Health & Wellness has the highest Shopify Plus rate (78.8%) among top-scoring stores and the second-highest average app count (4.1):
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Just Ingredients | 13 | 15 | 50K-200K | Pipeline (Paid) |
| 16 | Teami Blends | 11 | 16 | 200K-1M | Custom |
| 26 | Bodyhealth | 11 | 10 | 50K-200K | Turbo (Paid) |
| 40 | MUD\WTR | 10 | 26 | 200K-1M | Custom |
MUD\WTR holds the record for the most pixels in our top 50: 26 tracking pixels. For a coffee alternative brand, that level of tracking suggests sophisticated multi-channel attribution, likely running campaigns across Meta, Google, TikTok, podcast ads, and affiliate networks simultaneously.
Just Ingredients takes the #2 overall spot with 13 apps and 15 pixels. Health & Wellness brands invest aggressively in tech because their products typically have high repeat purchase rates and strong lifetime value, making the ROI on email, SMS, and loyalty tools very clear.
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Posh Peanut | 15 | 15 | 1M-5M | Custom |
| 15 | Belly Bandit | 11 | 16 | 50K-200K | Custom |
Posh Peanut is the #1 store in our ranking. With 15 apps, 15 pixels, 1M-5M monthly traffic, and a custom theme on Shopify Plus, it has the deepest tech stack of any store in our database. They sell bamboo baby clothing and have built a powerhouse operation with nearly 780K Instagram followers.
Baby & Kids stores tend to invest heavily in tech because baby products drive strong subscription and repeat purchase behavior.
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Evryjewels | 13 | 7 | 200K-1M | Custom |
| 44 | Adina Eden | 10 | 20 | 50K-200K | Testament (Paid) |
Evryjewels ranks #6 overall with 13 apps and 821K Instagram followers. For a jewelry brand, that social following is significant. They run a custom theme and invest across email, reviews, support, upsell, and loyalty, making them one of the most complete operations in the category.
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | CountyComm | 12 | 8 | 50K-200K | Custom |
| 18 | Woolx | 11 | 14 | 50K-200K | Impulse (Paid) |
| 41 | Ridge Wallet | 10 | 21 | 200K-1M | Custom |
Ridge Wallet is one of the most well-known DTC success stories on Shopify, and its 21 pixels match that reputation. They've built a brand with massive ad spend across YouTube, Meta, and influencer channels, requiring deep attribution tracking.
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 34 | Teangle | 11 | 10 | 50K-200K | Impulse (Paid) |
| 38 | Art of Tea | 11 | 7 | 200K-1M | Custom |
| 49 | nutpods | 10 | 15 | 50K-200K | Custom |
nutpods (dairy-free creamers) represents the high-repeat CPG model that thrives on Shopify. With 10 apps and 15 pixels, they've built the infrastructure for subscription-driven growth. Food & Beverage brands on this list all run custom themes, investing in unique shopping experiences.
| Rank | Store | Apps | Pixels | Traffic | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Béis | 13 | 6 | 200K-1M | Travel & Luggage |
| 23 | The Koin Club | 11 | 12 | 50K-200K | Hobby |
| 28 | Plushie Dreadfuls | 11 | 10 | 50K-200K | Hobby |
| 29 | Emily Ley | 11 | 10 | 50K-200K | Hobby |
| 31 | Modern Picnic | 11 | 10 | 50K-200K | Fashion |
| 43 | PoolPartsToGo | 10 | 20 | 50K-200K | Other |
Béis (Shay Mitchell's travel brand) takes the #7 spot with 13 apps and 1M Instagram followers. It's the top store in Travel & Luggage and one of the most celebrity-backed Shopify brands.
PoolPartsToGo is the sleeper hit. A pool parts store with 10 apps and 20 pixels in the 50K-200K tier. It proves you don't need a glamorous category to build a sophisticated ecommerce operation.
How do the top-scoring stores (lead fit 90+) compare to the full Shopify ecosystem?
| Metric | Top Stores (90+) | All 289K Stores | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avg Apps | 3.6 | 1.7 | 2.1x |
| Avg Pixels | 7.3 | 4.4 | 1.7x |
| Avg Products | 3,396 | 1,622 | 2.1x |
| Shopify Plus | 70.8% | 15.2% | 4.7x |
| Custom Theme | 44.4% | 18.7% | 2.4x |
| Paid Theme | 46.6% | 33.4% | 1.4x |
| Free Theme | 8.9% | 47.9% | 5.4x less |
The sharpest contrast: free theme usage drops from 48% to 9% among top stores. This doesn't mean free themes are bad (Steve Madden and Brooklinen prove otherwise), but most top stores invest in custom or paid themes.
The 4.7x difference in Shopify Plus adoption is the strongest qualifying signal. If a store runs Shopify Plus, there's a 70.8% chance it has a 90+ lead score. For agencies prospecting enterprise clients, Plus status is the fastest filter. See our store benchmarks study for more tier-level data.
We analyzed the tech stacks of the top 200 highest-scoring stores. Here's what they run:
| App | Category | Adoption Among Top 200 |
|---|---|---|
| Shop Pay | Payment | 98.0% |
| Klaviyo | Email Marketing | 96.5% |
| Gorgias | Support | 62.5% |
| Yotpo Reviews | Reviews | 56.5% |
| Yotpo Loyalty | Loyalty | 51.5% |
| Attentive | SMS Marketing | 49.0% |
| Rebuy | Upsell | 48.0% |
| Back in Stock | Notifications | 39.5% |
| Swym Wishlist | Wishlist | 36.5% |
| Tapcart | Mobile App | 32.0% |
| Afterpay | BNPL | 29.0% |
| Triple Whale | Analytics | 29.0% |
| Elevar | Analytics | 29.0% |
| Postscript SMS | SMS Marketing | 28.0% |
| Smile.io | Loyalty | 18.5% |
The "Top Store Stack" pattern: Klaviyo + Gorgias + Yotpo + Rebuy appears in nearly half of the top 200 stores. This combination covers the four core needs: email marketing, customer support, social proof, and AOV optimization.
A notable contrast with the broader ecosystem: Judge.me leads reviews at 11.8% adoption across all stores, but among the top 200, Yotpo Reviews dominates at 56.5% vs Judge.me's 16%. Top stores prefer Yotpo's enterprise features despite its higher price. See our review apps comparison for a full breakdown.
Analytics is a top-store signal. Triple Whale and Elevar each appear on 29% of top stores but less than 1% of all stores. Running a third-party analytics or attribution tool is one of the clearest indicators of marketing sophistication. For more on analytics adoption, see our analytics apps study.
SMS is the growth channel. Attentive (49%) and Postscript (28%) together cover 77% of the top 200. Across all stores, SMS adoption is under 1%. If a store runs an SMS tool, it's operating at a level most stores haven't reached. See our SMS marketing apps study.
Among stores scoring 90+ on our lead fit score, theme preferences shift dramatically from the ecosystem average:
| Theme | Type | Share of Top Stores |
|---|---|---|
| Impulse | Paid | 5.6% |
| Prestige | Paid | 5.2% |
| Dawn | Free | 4.6% |
| Ella | Custom | 2.9% |
| Symmetry | Paid | 2.6% |
| Broadcast | Paid | 1.7% |
| Turbo | Paid | 1.7% |
| Flex | Custom | 1.7% |
| Warehouse | Paid | 1.5% |
Impulse and Prestige lead among top stores. Both are premium themes from Archetype, optimized for high-converting product pages and rich media. They're the go-to choice for established stores that want a polished look without a full custom build.
Dawn at #3 is surprising. Shopify's default free theme still powers 4.6% of top stores, including Steve Madden (5M+ traffic) and Brooklinen (200K-1M). Dawn's performance optimizations and clean architecture make it viable even at scale. For the full theme breakdown, see our most popular themes study.
Custom themes dominate by total share (44.4% of top stores), but they're too fragmented to appear individually in the top 10 list. Each custom theme is unique to its brand.
Here's how the 49,552 stores scoring 90+ distribute across industries:
| Category | Top Stores | Avg Apps | Plus % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion | 12,503 | 3.7 | 69.4% |
| Home & Garden | 6,614 | 3.4 | 70.0% |
| Beauty | 4,912 | 4.2 | 74.3% |
| Food & Beverage | 4,309 | 3.7 | 69.2% |
| Jewelry | 3,419 | 3.5 | 63.8% |
| Health & Wellness | 2,995 | 4.1 | 78.8% |
| Sports & Fitness | 2,564 | 3.7 | 73.7% |
| Outdoor & Adventure | 1,678 | 3.7 | 74.7% |
| Baby & Kids | 1,506 | 3.7 | 74.6% |
| Electronics | 1,486 | 3.3 | 65.1% |
| Pets | 995 | 3.8 | 74.6% |
| Automotive | 958 | 3.2 | 66.3% |
Beauty stores invest the most in apps (4.2 avg among top stores) and have the third-highest Plus rate (74.3%). The beauty industry's emphasis on reviews, UGC, and repeat purchases drives higher app adoption.
Health & Wellness has the highest Plus rate at 78.8%. Supplement and wellness brands often run subscription models that require Shopify Plus's checkout customization.
Automotive and Electronics lag in both app count and Plus adoption among top stores. These categories often have more complex fulfillment needs handled by backend systems we can't detect.
For industry-specific tech stack recommendations, see our tech stack by growth stage guide.
Geography of stores scoring 90+:
| Country | Top Stores | % of Top | Avg Apps |
|---|---|---|---|
| US | 23,160 | 46.7% | 3.9 |
| UK | 4,925 | 9.9% | 3.6 |
| Australia | 3,613 | 7.3% | 3.8 |
| Canada | 2,550 | 5.1% | 3.6 |
| Germany | 888 | 1.8% | 3.5 |
| France | 610 | 1.2% | 3.3 |
| New Zealand | 571 | 1.2% | 3.7 |
| Netherlands | 498 | 1.0% | 3.5 |
The US accounts for 47% of top stores, which is proportional to its share of the overall ecosystem (41%). But Australia is over-represented at 7.3% of top stores vs 4.4% of all stores. Australian stores run 3.8 apps on average among the top tier, second only to the US (3.9). See our store benchmarks for full country data.
This list shows 50 stores, but there are 49,552 stores scoring 90+ in our database. Here's how to find the ones relevant to your work:
If you're an agency looking for clients: Filter by traffic tier (50K-200K is the sweet spot), category, and tech stack gaps. A store scoring 90+ that's missing email marketing or reviews is a warm prospect with budget. Use the StoreInspect dashboard to find them.
If you're studying competitor tech stacks: Look up any store in our database to see its full app and pixel stack. Compare it against the benchmarks above: does your competitor run more or fewer apps than the category average?
If you're a store owner benchmarking yourself: Check how your app count, pixel count, and theme type compare to the top stores in your category. If you're in Beauty with 1 app and a free theme, you're significantly below the category leaders who average 4.2 apps and 74% custom/paid themes.
For a complete prospecting framework, see our ICP framework guide. For cold outreach templates, see our email templates.
Based on our data ranking of 289,115 stores, Posh Peanut (poshpeanut.com) has the most sophisticated tech stack: 15 apps, 15 pixels, 1M+ monthly traffic, custom theme, and Shopify Plus. They sell bamboo baby clothing and have built one of the most instrumented Shopify operations we've seen.
Every store in our top 50 runs Shopify Plus and scores 100/100 on our lead fit score. They average 11.4 apps and 11.6 pixels. 96.5% use Klaviyo for email, 62.5% use Gorgias for support, and 56.5% use Yotpo for reviews.
Impulse leads at 5.6% share among stores scoring 90+, followed by Prestige at 5.2% and Dawn at 4.6%. Custom themes collectively account for 44.4% of top stores. See our theme market share study.
The top 50 stores average 11.4 apps, but the broader "top store" segment (score 90+) averages 3.6 apps. This compares to 1.7 apps across all 289K stores. The jump from 1.7 to 3.6 apps is what separates growing stores from the average. See our benchmarks study.
Among the top 200 stores: Klaviyo (96.5%), Gorgias (62.5%), Yotpo Reviews (56.5%), Yotpo Loyalty (51.5%), Attentive SMS (49%), and Rebuy (48%). This differs from the broader ecosystem where Judge.me leads reviews and Mailchimp is the #2 email tool. See our top store apps analysis.
70.8% of stores scoring 90+ on our lead fit score are on Shopify Plus. Plus stores install 2.6x more apps (3.7 vs 1.4) and run 2.1x more pixels (7.9 vs 3.8) than Standard stores. Plus starts at $2,300/month and provides checkout customization, automation tools, and higher API limits.
Beauty leads in app sophistication (4.2 avg apps among top stores), Health & Wellness has the highest Plus adoption (78.8%), and Fashion has the most top stores by volume (12,503). The best niches for Shopify depend on your business model.
Use the StoreInspect dashboard to filter stores by category, traffic tier, apps, and lead fit score. You can also browse our top stores directory by category, or use the Chrome extension to analyze any store you visit.
Only 8.9% of top-scoring stores (90+) use free themes, compared to 48% across all stores. However, notable exceptions exist: Steve Madden (5M+ traffic) and Brooklinen (200K-1M) both run Dawn. Free themes can work at scale if the operational infrastructure is strong. See our theme benchmarks.
Top stores average 7.3 pixels. The most common: Google Analytics 4 (nearly universal), Meta Pixel (75%+ at 50K+ traffic), Google Ads (73%), Klaviyo pixel (52%), and TikTok Pixel (29%). See our pixel detection study.
Look at measurable signals: app count (3+ indicates investment), pixel count (7+ indicates sophisticated marketing), theme type (custom or paid suggests budget), and Shopify Plus status. A store with 50K+ traffic, 3+ apps, and multiple tracking pixels is operating at a level most stores never reach. Our audit guide covers this in detail.
| Finding | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Top 50 average 11.4 apps vs ecosystem avg of 1.7 | Operational sophistication is measurable |
| 96.5% of top 200 use Klaviyo | Email marketing is non-negotiable at scale |
| Yotpo dominates reviews among top stores (56.5% vs Judge.me's 16%) | Enterprise features win at the top tier |
| Only 8.9% of top stores use free themes | Theme investment correlates with store quality |
| 70.8% of 90+ stores are on Shopify Plus | Plus status is the strongest qualifying signal |
| Beauty and Health lead in app sophistication | High-margin, repeat-purchase categories invest most in tech |
| Posh Peanut (Baby & Kids) is #1 | A bamboo baby clothing brand outranks Nike and Gymshark |
These rankings are updated as our database grows. The current analysis reflects 289,115 stores as of March 2026.
